Helmets
Whether you are riding a bike, an e-bike, a scooter or any other personal transport device, choosing your helmet is critical. The protective gear you wear around your head protects your skull and brain. Modern electric scooters, e-bikes, and bikes are fast. Some personal electric vehicles can exceed 40 MPH (64 kmh). Add that to the danger of encountering a motor vehicle or road hazard, and a helmet is an absolute must.
However, all helmets are not the same. Some are designed for different riders, others for different personal vehicles and others for different situations. Therefore, it’s essential to decide which helmet is best for you and your situation. For example, a standard bicycle helmet is considered appropriate for riding a scooter for low-speed riding. But if you ride at higher speeds, you should wear an e-bike or motorcycle helmet.
Here are the general recommendations for helmet choices.
If you ride under 20 mph in low-risk situations, like on a path not near traffic, a helmet that meets bicycle safety standards is likely appropriate. For more protection, consider a downhill helmet, like the ones typically chosen for riding e-skateboards and downhill mountain bikes.
Assess your risk level by asking yourself:
- Will you be riding at night or with poor visibility?
- Are you riding in poor weather, like snow or rain?
- Will you ride at higher speeds or ride longer near your top speed?
- Do you travel on poor, high-traffic roads or where there is not a dedicated lane?
If you answer “yes” to even one of these questions, get a safer, sturdier helmet. Also, be sure you get a helmet that is comfortable enough that you will actually wear it.
How to know which is the perfect helmet for you.
First, decide on the appropriate level of protection.
- Minimum protection (< 20 mph): Standard Bicycle Helmet
- More protection (< 20 mph): Downhill Helmet
- Moderate protection (> 20 mph): e-Bike Helmet
- Maximum protection (> 20 mph): Motorcycle Helmet
Then, measure the size of your head.
Using a measuring tape, have another person measure the circumference of (around) your head in centimetres. Measure about 0.5 cm above your eyebrows. Always measure more than once to be sure you got it right. The helmet sizes list a head size in centimetres.
As important as getting a high-quality helmet to provide protection for your skull and brain based on your risk level is wearing one that fits properly. A helmet that doesn’t fit well will not protect you optimally if you crash.
Choose based on your level of protection and size, and get a style and colours you like. The more you like the style and colours, the more likely you are to wear it. Consider complementing your favourite riding jacket or your bike, e-bike, scooter or other personal transport vehicle. Many people choose more than one helmet for different riding scenarios, so they have a choice of more or less protection in various riding situations.
We carry a wide range of different helmets here at Eazyro.com, so you can choose based on your size and the level of protection you need. And if in doubt, always get the next higher level of protection! So keep your skull and brain safe!
