Kids Helmets
Falls from bikes can cause serious head injuries, so ensure your child always wears a helmet on every ride. Help your child get into the habit of always wearing a helmet by establishing the habit early. Even toddlers riding tricycles should wear kids helmets to get them in the habit, as well as protect their tiny heads. As a passenger on the back of an adult’s bike, it is critical a baby or toddler always wear a helmet.
As your child gets older, present the helmet as a gift, so they are excited about wearing it. Some brightly coloured wrapping paper and a few bows go a long way towards getting cooperation when it comes to wearing kids helmets. Later, let your child participate in choosing their own helmet, so they like the colours and style. Just like clothing, if they like it, they are more likely to wear it.
Also, set a good example. Always wear a helmet yourself. Everyone on a family bike outing should be wearing a helmet. This is, in fact, the most critical factor in getting kids to wear a helmet. Some careful conversation about how important it is to protect their heads will also increase the likelihood your child wears their helmet. Remind them that their bike is a vehicle, not a toy, and they have responsibilities as a rider.
