Tires & Pumps
If you have air-filled tires, you need a pump to maintain your tire pressure. Keeping your tire pressure up will improve the quality of your ride, give you a better grip, make it easier and more efficient to ride, and extend your battery life. But these essential parts of e-bikes and e-scooters – the tires – are frequently overlooked or forgotten. For example, many riders figure if the tires aren’t punctured, and it seems they can ride on them, why should they worry?
But these essential parts of e-bikes and e-scooters – the tires – are frequently overlooked or forgotten. For example, many riders figure if the tires aren’t punctured, and it seems they can ride on them, why should they worry?
But your tires are the only thing between you and the road (or the path or the dirt). So, they are critical to your safety and the overall performance of your personal vehicle. Also, while air-filled tires require some maintenance, the ride quality, better grip and easier handling make them a popular choice.
So, if you have air-filled tires, you should use a pump to manage your tire pressure. Here’s why.
Resists Punctures
With air-filled tires, it’s important to use a pump to make sure they are pumped up to the recommended level to help avoid being punctured. Tires with low pressures compress too much, which widens the part of the tire that comes into contact with the ground. The increased surface area makes it more likely you’ll pick up a sharp object. Also, the tire more easily deforms if you drive into something hard, like a rock or a curb. Then, the low pressure could result in a snakebite or pinch puncture. This is where the tire compresses onto the tube, pinching the tube between the hard object and the rim of the wheel. As a result, the tube slits open, creating the same issue as running over a nail, only it’s harder to identify and repair.
Improved Grip
As your tires grip the road, you get more control. More control means a safer ride. Keeping your tires pumped to recommended levels gives you a more predictable grip. If you are riding off-road or on loose surfaces, you may get a slightly better grip from lower tire pressure. But tires are designed to provide the best performance and safety at the recommended pressure levels.
Extend Battery Range
Your bike, e-bike or scooter are coping with less friction or rolling resistance at optimal tire pressure. This is especially important for e-bikes because it reduces your effort needed to go how fast you want. For e-scooters, it is even more important because you rely entirely on only the motor and battery to move you along. So, saving your battery power increases the range of the e-scooter while making it so the motor doesn’t need to work so hard, ultimately saving some wear and tear.
More Comfortable Ride
Air-filled tires, either tubed or tubeless, give a much smoother ride quality and more comfort as compared to solid tires. In addition, properly inflated tires naturally cushion you as you ride over rough surfaces, gaps and bumps easier.
If your tire pressure is too high, you get a hard ride, more like solid tires and pressure spikes which could cause a blowout. On the other hand, if you have too little pressure, your rims can bottom out on the ground, which makes for a rough ride, along with the higher risk for punctures.
Extended Tire Life
With fewer punctures, you are bound to need to replace your tires less often. But by keeping your tire pressure at the recommended level, you also reduce wear on the rubber on the outside of the tire. This increases the overall life expectancy of your tires.
Low tire pressures cause more wear because of the greater surface area in contact with the ground as you ride. Plus, there is the extra deflection along with the sideways deforming of the tires when you go around corners. It all causes more rubber to wear away, meaning more replacement tires. So keep your tires pumped up!
Removing an old tire and replacing it with a new one takes you off the road for a time. But, running your tires at the recommended pressures helps reduce the need for replacements. We carry a selection of tires and pumps here at Eazyro.com to get you back on the road as quickly as possible!
